About
Coming soon: The Virtru Outlook 365 Add-in will support inline decryption in certain scenarios. The following article details configuration and supported scenarios.
Prerequisites
In order to access this new feature, users will need to ensure that their Virtru add-in's manifest is on v1.40.0 or higher. Checking and updating the manifest depends on installation method:
- If the add-in was administratively deployed, the manifest will need to be updated in the Microsoft 365 admin center
- If the add-in was individually installed by end-users, they will need to uninstall and reinstall Virtru in the sideload menu
Supported Platforms
Inline decryption will only work when using the Virtru Outlook 365 Add-in on Outlook on the web (OWA) or the new Outlook for Windows.
Inline decryption will not work on classic Outlook, Outlook for Mac, or Outlook for iOS / Android. On unsupported platforms, please reference the instructions here: Read secure messages via Outlook 365 Add-in (for Web, Desktop, Mobile).
Behavior
If on a compatible platform, you should see a confirmation ribbon that Virtru has decrypt the message. Depending on if your org has two-click view for encrypted emails enabled, you may need to click View Message.
When viewing the decrypted message, you will see a banner that indicates "This is a secure message chain, protected by Virtru
For attachments, you will only see a View option. This will route you to the Secure Reader where you can view and download applicable attachments.
If this is a message you sent, you can select View Email to view and manage security settings and access.
Unsupported Flows
In order for inline decryption to process, the secure email must contain certain attributes. Unfortunately, certain secure emails will not contain these attributes:
- Secure emails sent using the Gmail plugin
- Secure emails sent before February 2026
If a message does not decrypt inline, please reference the instructions here: Read secure messages via Outlook 365 Add-in (for Web, Desktop, Mobile).
Additionally, if you are viewing the latest secure email in a thread of secure messages, you will not be able to open the previous messages in the chain. If needed, please open the prior email directly.
When the Task Pane is Still Needed
Inline decryption makes accessing content easier, but the Virtru task pane is still needed for certain actions:
- Activation
- Manage sent policies: revoke/reauthorize, expiration date, watermarking, disable forwarding, etc.
