About
Persistent File Protection (PFP) is a Virtru feature that allows organizations to download a secure link to the Virtru Secure Reader. This persistent protection is achieved via the tdf.html file format. If you are reading this, it is likely because you are trying to access a tdf.html file someone sent you. This article will cover everything you need to know about accessing a tdf.html file.
Once you download and click to open a tdf.html file, it will open a web page and bring you to Virtru's Secure Reader. The Secure Reader will require you to quickly verify you are an authorized recipient and then display the file in your browser. This process is how the sender ensures that only authorized parties can view it no matter where the file goes or who it is shared with.
All tdf.html files are readable only through the Secure Reader. This means you are not able to download and modify the document and are restricted to viewing it in your browser with Virtru's Secure Reader.
Follow the steps below for a detailed walkthrough of how to access your secure file.
Please Note:
If your organization is a Virtru customer and you want to send PFP files, check out our Persistent File Protection (PFP) article that walks you through how to enable and send PFP files!
How to access and read your secure file
1. To start the process, open the tdf.html file you received/downloaded. If you received the file through a Virtru encrypted email, follow our instructions on reading and replying to a Virtru encrypted email, then click on the file once you access your secure email.
or
2. After you open/View the file, a new tab will open in your browser. When prompted, enter your email address.
An important note about email aliases
Please be sure to verify using the exact email address to which the original secure file was sent. If the file was sent to an alias, group address, or distribution list address, you will need to select or enter that exact email address rather than your personal primary address.
If the file was not originally shared with you, you can follow the Request Access Workflow to request access from the file owner.
3. Choose how you'd like to verify your identity. Virtru accepts several modes of verification:
- Google, Office 365, and other Microsoft-hosted account users can use their pre-existing credentials to log into the Secure Reader using Sign in with Google, Sign in with Microsoft, or Sign in with Outlook. If you choose this route you can skip step #5 below
- Send Verification Email
4. If you selected Send Verification Email option, check your inbox for your verification email. It will come from verify@virtru.com. Open the verification email and click Verify Me or enter the code in the Secure Reader to view your message.
Note:
The verification process needs to be completed in the same browser on the same device as the file you are attempting to access in order to confirm your identity.
If you do not receive the verification email, click here to troubleshoot.
5. Your secure file will open in the Virtru Secure Reader in your browser.
