Virtru customers have two ways to add users to their Virtru team. They can add them manually OR sync their Virtru Team with Google or Microsoft (Entra ID) to pull in users automatically.
Syncing helps streamline user management for larger organizations. Admins don't have to add users manually and users gain access to additional functionality, such as support for group addresses and shared mailboxes.
In this article, we will walk you through an overview of how syncing works and things to consider prior to syncing.
How-To Articles:
Organization Types
There are two ways to add users to your Virtru team. You can add them manually in the Virtru Control Center (Ad Hoc Organization) OR you can Sync them in from Google or Microsoft (Synced Organization). This decision will impact how you manage your Virtru team moving forward and will impact how Virtru functions for your users.
When you sync, you are basically telling Virtru to deffer to Google or Microsoft. So, any users you want to add need to be added upstream, then they can be pulled into Virtru once the sync refreshes. Syncing also gives you access to some additional features and functionality that your users might find helpful.
When choosing to sync vs manually adding users, there are a couple key things to consider:
Manually Add Users (Ad Hoc Org) |
Sync Users (Synced Org) |

Additional Syncing Details
- When syncing with Virtru, the sync pulls in ALL users from Google or Microsoft.
- If you want to license a subset of your users, then you will need to create a Provisioning Group (for Email Products and Drive Extensions).
- Note: All users will still be synced in, but only users in your Provisioning Group will get a license.
- This also means you cannot maually remove any users in your Control Center. More info can be found here.
- When you add new users to Google or Microsoft, they don't automatically pull into Virtru until the sync refreshes. You can manually refresh the sync by following these instructions.
- If you want to schedule a daily recurring sync to run automatically, please contact Virtru Customer Support and we can get that setup for you.
- When you sync, all Super Admins in Google or Microsoft automatically become admins in Virtru. If you do not want this to happen, there is an optional configuration where Virtru can disable admin mirroring for your account. This means that you can manually manage admin permissions in the Virtru Control Center.
- All users are still added via a sync
- Contact Virtru Customer Support if you want to disable admin mirroring
