Virtru Data Loss Prevention (DLP) scanning is a set of rules that describe the pattern and/or plain text you want to search for in an email or attachment. When a rule is met, you can have Virtru automatically take action (ex. automatically encrypt, warn user, etc.) For example, you could trigger automatic encryption for number strings formatted like Social Security numbers. These rules allow for greater control and protection of your data.
DLP rules get downloaded to the browser and/or Virtru plugin that is running on the sender’s computer. Because these rules are operating inside of the sender’s machine, all search operations are happening outside of Virtru’s servers. This ensures the only information exchanged to Virtru occurs for encrypted messages that trigger a DLP rule and not any of the unencrypted scanned content.
An important note about DLP Rules:
All DLP rules (stock or custom) run independently of one another. If multiple rules trigger, then the most secure rule will win. For example, if one rule is triggered and set to ‘log’ only, but another rule is triggered and set to ‘encrypt’, then the message will encrypt as that is more secure.
